From our humble beginnings in 1879 as the Young Men’s General Debating Society, Royal South Street has grown to become one of the largest and the longest running performing arts eisteddfod in Australia.
The inaugural Grand Annual Eisteddfod of Australasia was held in 1891 right here in Ballarat, attracting some 260 entrants who performed across 10 days of competition. Is it possible organisers then, dared to imagine, that their vision for fostering the performing arts would continue into the twenty first century?
In 2020 we invite you to join us in celebrating 129 years of competition. Given the current global health pandemic of COVID – 19, Royal South Street Society is working hard to deliver an alternative Eisteddfod for 2020, that continues to uphold our prestigious level of competition whilst also ensuring the health and safety of our competitors, volunteers, audience and staff. We look forward to celebrating 129 years of our Eisteddfod with the opening of Celebrating Chopin on Sunday 19th July to our closing on 31st October, with the Australian Calisthenics Competition.
