From our humble beginnings in 1879 as the Young Men’s General Debating Society, Royal South Street has grown to become one of the largest and the longest running performing arts eisteddfod in Australia.
The inaugural Grand Annual Eisteddfod of Australasia was held in 1891 right here in Ballarat, attracting some 260 entrants who performed across 10 days of competition. Is it possible organisers then, dared to imagine, that their vision for fostering the performing arts would continue into the twenty first century?
In 2016 we invite you to join us in celebrating 125 years of competition. We have a fabulous calendar of events in store and start by going back to where it all began, with the February launch of our Great Debate series. Plus coming soon, your opportunity to contribute your South Street story in Past & Present, our on-line living history project.
