My name is Sandra Fishwick. I was born in Ballarat over 7 decades ago. I have 1 sister and 2 brothers. We were a family that loved sport.
After having 3 gorgeous daughters who wanted to be involved in Ballet and singing, thanks to Kathleen Hobson for steering my daughters into the arts. I felt like a fish out of water. It was around 1981 when my daughters started competing in the Dance section at Royal South Street. In 1983, I was part of the Ballarat Ballet Guild alongside Tony Cole and other wonderful people. We introduced the 12 years and Under Ballet Championship, which is still being held 41 years later. That is how my love of the comps began.
I have volunteered for many years (olden days played the cassette tapes), front of house, helping in the office, registration, security, gofer, stage manager, Adjudicators helper and part of the Dance Committee.
The friendships with not only the volunteers, the staff, and board members you build a rapport with teachers, parents, competitors and Her Maj staff.
Unfortunately, this year, I will be overseas and shall miss the comps, but I look forward to Royal South Street competitions being back at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 2025.
