CONTINUING THE LEGACY

Our new piano has made been made possible through the support of Mr Andrew Cochrane, our Chopin Competition benefactor and Bernies Music Land, our Schimmel Pianoforte sponsor.

The new grand piano will be named the Margaret Schofield OAM Memorial Piano, in memory of Andrew’s mother, Margaret, and will be housed at Ballarat Mechanics Insititute (BMI) for our annual Pianoforte, Chopin, Vocal and Aria competitions, and will also be available for approved community hire. We want the BMI to remain alive with the sounds of music!

Margaret Schofield OAM

Margaret Schofield was one of the Australia’s leading pianists during her distinguished career, performing as a soloist, accompanist and actively teaching the piano for almost 60 years. In 1988 she was awarded the OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for her services to music and the community. She continued to teach and play regularly until almost 80 years of age and was a supporter of the Royal South Street Society.
