St Patrick’s Cathedral is currently recruiting Choral Scholars to sing in the Cantate Domino choir.
The Choral Scholarships are provided to students in Years 3-6 who:
- have musical interest and aptitude
- are willing to learn and perform traditional styles of sacred music, including Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony.
The children join the Cathedral’s Cantate Domino choir, currently comprised of 30 adults and children.
The Choral Scholarships provide $1,000 per annum towards the general education tuition – or musical tuition – of the children.
The Choral Scholars are required to
- sing twice a month at 10.30am Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral
- rehearse weekly during school term time, with an extra rehearsal immediately before Sunday Masses
- sing in one Easter and one Christmas service
- attend professional development workshops during the year.
We provide our Choral Scholars with opportunities to learn and perform a wide range of exciting repertoire and opportunities to grow and develop as singers and musicians:
- this year in May we sang at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne and afterwards shared lunch and recreational activities with the Melbourne Cathedral choir
- we sing annually at the Ballarat Choral Festival. Last year we sang the Thomas Tallis motet If Ye Love Me and this year we will be singing the Kyrie from Missa Secunda by Hans Leo Hassler – https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZGT9XXU6TuXczH3aUEmr-WhMMLzO9q-h/view?usp=drive_link
- the children sing annually at Carols @ the Cathedral – https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aTjGWIFftkHnhnOG0Zmpi55pByQqSEuO/view?usp=drive_link
- we sing at community events such as Administration Day
- the children receive mentoring from a group of very experienced adult singers who help train them in sacred music repertoire.
