Formed in 2009, Ballarat Wind Orchestra is the region’s premier wind ensemble.
The Orchestra has completed several ambitious projects since its inception, including premiering new Australian works for Wind Band and collaborating with organisations such as the Ballarat Choral Society and the Victoria Chorale to present Carmina Burana and Mozart’s Requiem in Ballarat and Melbourne.
The Wind Orchestra completed tours to Europe in 2011 and 2018, and China in 2014. This year, the Orchestra will perform throughout France and Italy, including performances in Angers, the Chiesa di San Massimo in Turin, Riva del Garda and at the Festival des Anches d’Azur in La Croix-Valmer.
Sally-Anne Russell will join the Ballarat Wind Orchestra and conductor Mario Dobernig as special guest for this year’s tour.
Mario Dobernig- Mario is the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Art of Sound Orchestra and the Victoria Chorale, Co-Artistic Director of the Albury Chamber Music Festival and Director of Music at St. Andrew’s Brighton. He is also the founding conductor of the Ballarat Wind Orchestra.
Mario holds a PhD in Music, Master degrees in Percussion, Conducting, and Musicology, as well as Bachelor degrees in Percussion and Music Education from universities around the world. Internationally, Mario has conducted orchestras in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He enjoys conversations in English, German, French and Italian, and has a keen interest in geopolitics.
Sally-Anne Russell – Having performed on the concert platform and operatic stage in twenty five countries, Sally-Anne Russell is one of Australia’s finest mezzo sopranos. Her extensive list of recordings and awards are testament to her contribution to the arts both nationally and internationally. Sally-Anne has performed more than 80 operatic roles with major opera companies and orchestras throughout Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Canada, USA, UK, Japan and Europe. She is also a prolific exponent of early and Baroque repertoire.
The Ballarat Wind Orchestra is delighted to share the stage once again with Sally-Anne to present a highly entertaining concert prior to their tour to France and Italy.
