This reflection is from Hayden Morgan (2026 – Age 16) on his experience entering the Composition Section in the 2025 Royal South Street Society Ballarat Eisteddfod.
The Royal South Street Society Pianoforte section was the very first piano competition I had ever entered, and I am so grateful I did – not only for the wonderful experience, but for the multitude of opportunities that followed.
While performing my own composition on stage, I felt a real sense of joy in sharing my music with others. I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to the other competitor’s compositions. The main highlight however, was the masterclass following our section, presented by renowned and acclaimed composer and pianist Professor Richard Chew. Our learning was enriched immensely as he shared his lifelong knowledge and wisdom on composing.
He was extremely encouraging to us as young artists, inspiring us to continue composing and to pursue out passion with confidence. Richard also suggested that I get my composition professionally recorded, which was a wonderful learning experience in itself. Since recording it, I have been offered work experience within the recording studio this year, giving me insight into the technical side of the music industry and further supporting my development as a composer.
Following the masterclass, Richard kindly offered ongoing support to us all as an informal mentor, and to my delight, also invited us to attend some of his upcoming concerts. I have since attended three of his concerts which were awe inspiring, and I’ve also had the privilege of hearing Richard play his compositions and discussing the art of composing in general.
Had I not participated in the prestigious RSSS Ballarat Eisteddfod, I would still be composing – but not with the same depth of knowledge or the incredible opportunities I have gained since.
Thank you Royal South Street Society!
